Transmission System Design is generally referred as TSD. This subject is allotted in Third Year 2nd semester of Mechanical Engineering, by University of Pune. Syllabus of this subject is really very interesting for those who want to go for Automobile career. Here we see, scope of Transmission System Design.
1. Rolling Contact Bearings:
It starts with types, capacity, life and design aspects of Rolling Contact bearings. Lubrication in bearings, taper roller bearings, manufacturers catalog etc.
2. Friction:
Here comes friction again. Friction is divided into two main parts.
a. Friction Clutches.
It covers classification and selection of clutch, torque transmission capacities, single plate clutch, multi-plate clutch, cone clutch, centrifugal clutch, friction materials used in clutches, applications, operations etc.
b. Brakes.
Covers design considerations in brakes, pivoted block brake, internal expanding brakes, disc brakes etc.
3. Belt Drive, Chain Drive and Rope Drive:
Construction of belts, flat belt, V belt, design considerations of belts, timing belts, advantages and limitations of flat belt, V belt and ropes. Another good topic is belt tensioning methods. Similar to belts, we need to learn about chain drive, number of links in chain, length of chain, power rating of chain, advantages and limitations of chain drive.
4. Gears:
Here we need to study all the gears in detail again.
- Spur Gear.
- Helical Gear.
- Bevel Gear.
- Worm Gear.
I have wrapped up TSD in very short article but its really a pervasive subject anyway. Actual design of gear box is very good work and tests a lot of knowledge of total engineering.
Thanks for Reading.
