Introduction to Tribology

This article belongs to series “Mechanical Engineering Guide“. You can easily access other articles at QUICK LINKS page. According to syllabus of university of Pune, Tribology comes in 3rd year, 2nd semester of mechanical engineering degree.

Tribology, in simple words, is science of lubrication. It starts with simple properties of liquids or rather I must say as properties of lubricants, physical and chemical, their behavior in various conditions. We also learn about additives here. We generally see advertisements of lubricants on TVs, here we actually get to know what these lubricant ads means.

Friction and Wear:

Again, friction is major reason behind the Tribology. So, we need to know about it like, laws of friction, causes, friction measurement etc. And guess, what friction results in? Yep! WEAR. so again we learn causes of wear, wear measurement, theory of wear.

Lubrication:

Here starts the core Tribology. This part is really a bit harder due to its lengthiness and it contains a lot of derivations. Major topics under lubrication is Hydrodynamic Lubrication and Hydrostatic Lubrication. We need to go in much deep about the topic and study all aspects like basic concept, working, types, advantages, disadvantages, applications etc.

Afterward, it comes hydrostatic squeeze films and concept of gas lubrication, merits, demerits and applications. Last unit of the Tribology contains hydrodynamic thrust bearings, elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, oil seals, shields and gaskets.

That’s all in syllabus of Tribology.
