According to university of Pune, Metrology and Quality Control is studied in Third Year, 2nd semester of mechanical engineering. As its name suggests it have two main subdivisions.
- Metrology.
- Quality Control.
Metrology:
Similar to any other subject, Metrology starts with basics which we already know. These includes errors in measuring instruments, zero error etc. Along with this engineering view comes in action. i.e. we learn properties like flatness, straightness, squareness, roundness, angular measurements, precision measurements etc. Another interesting topics in this section is gauge calibration and design.
Comparators and Interferometers:
Comparators is another subsection in Metrology. It includes Mechanical, Pneumatic, Electrical, Hydraulic, Optical type of comparators. Interferometers are of different types viz. fringe patterns, optical, toolmakers microscope, profile projector etc.
Last part of Metrology covers Machine tool Metrology, Gear Metrology, Screw Thread Metrology etc. In the end, we learn various advances in the metrology, automatic inspection system, universal measuring machine, applications of laser in measurements, co-ordinate measuring machine.
Quality Control:
It starts with definition of quality. And in whole world wherever we speak of quality, guess whose name comes up: Dr. Edward Deming. Quality control is sort of management subject. It initially covers many definitions of quality, characteristics and elements of quality, its cost, value, quality policy and much more stuff.
Next part of QC is statistical quality control which is sort of commerce part and it lighten the concept of standard deviation, variance, mean, mode, median etc. Then we learn AQL, LTPD, AOQL like concepts.
Last part of quality control covers concepts like Six Sigma, defects, zero effects, quality standards like ISO 9000-2001, TS 16949, FMECA(Failure Mode Effect Criticallity Analysis), FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), kiezen, quality circle, TQM (Total Quality Management), Pareto Analysis etc.
Thats all about MQC. Its short for Metrology and Quality Control.
Thanks for Reading.
