11 Exciting Career Opportunities For Mechanical Engineers:

1. Power Generation:

Power sector is one of core places where mechanical engineers are constantly summoned. Take power plant of any type and any size, they need mechanical fellows to work there. Mechanical engineers can go for various work profiles there, from supervision of machinery, controlling various things, maintaining, designing (in initial phase) and many more.

2. Manufacturing, Production:

This is another big field for mechanical engineers. Any product, of any size, which is produced in large scale needs proper manufacturing facility to keep the quality high and cost of production low. Here mechanical engineers work at different level like at shop floor, inventory management, labor management, customer support, maintenance, design etc.

3. Maintenance:

This sounds like bit generalized term. But every industry needs the maintenance. Once the manufacturing facilities are set, maintenance team is responsible for running it for long term. In industries, there are people who invest their careers in maintenance field. Maintenance teams have planned maintenance. They take preventive maintenance to avoid breakdown. But, breakdowns are unavoidable. And this is time when these people are on fire. Labor, production line, machine downtime cost all are on stake, they have to resolve it ASAP.

4. Thermal & Thermodynamics:

Various industries like automobiles, compressors, power plants, refrigeration need persons having knowledge of Thermodynamics. This is one of core things that mechanical engineers learn in their academics.

5. Refrigeration & Air Conditioning:

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning can be considered as much evolved part of Thermal section. Today our cooling, rather I must say temperature conditioning, needs are allowing RAC sector to grow.

6. Automobiles:

Do I need to say anything about relation of Automotive / Automobile sector and Mechanical Engineering? They are always there!

7. Materials:

Science that deals with (metal) materials is called as Metallurgy. Though, there is dedicated stream Metallurgical Engineering, they are less. And mechanical engineers also work in the field.

8. PLM, CAD, CAM, CAE and Design:

This sector connects the two streams Mechanical Engineering and Computers. Mechanical engineers can work with various design softwares, product life-cycle management software, planning etc. Apart from using the softwares they can work in developing them too, but this needs their more interest in programming too.

9. Mechatronics, Automation and Robotics:

This is combination of Mechanical and Electronics. It is very popular in these days of Automatics. It needs knowledge of Designing and embedded systems.

10. Research and Development:

No industry can grow without Research and Development. This department need all kind of people and so do mechanical engineers. It depends on Industry too.

11. Teaching:

Teaching absolutely great after having bunch of industry experience. This is great way to share your valuable experience with people.

There are definitely way more of the Industrial Careers – Mechanical Engineering Jobs profiles around the world. If you want to share anything please reply in comments. Also, consider sharing this article or Plus it on Google.

What is Turbocharger or Turbocharging?

Turbocharging is method of improving the engine performance by precomressing the fresh air before sending it to engine cylinder. It is called as turbocharging because it uses the turbine which runs on the exhaust flow gases of the engine. Turbocharger improves the engine efficiency to certain limit. If we load it too much then, it may load up engine exhaust causing decrese in efficiency.

Key Features of VGTE – Variable Geometry Turbine Engine

About the Concentric Nature of Engine

Provides constant torque and better power even at lower speeds.

Multiple Toroids can be attached to same drive shaft depending upon power and torque needs.

Smooth and with much low vibrations than reciprocating engine.

About Fuels:

For same Torque and Power output, VGTE needs lesser amount of fuel. So, it is better from Fuel and Emission view.

It can operate on not only diesel but also with traditional and non traditional fuels including LPG, CNG, Ethanol, Methanol and Hydrogen.

Adujustable Power Stroke and Adjustable Compression Ratio.

About Low Part Count:

Generally, has lesser number of parts than same size other engines.

Less cost of manufacturing.

Better of mass production.

Lesser parts, better longevity.

Low vibrations again.

Introduction to Drilling Machine Operations:

As name suggests, Drilling Machine is used for drilling operations. But like that of Lathe Machine and Lathe Machine Operations, A Drilling Machine can be used for many operations which are explained below.

Drilling:

Drilling is simple operation in which holes are made in the job with the drill bit. Tool used is drill bit or twist drill. Material Removal Rate of drilling operation is very high.

Reaming:

Reaming is finishing operation. It is used after drilling is done. Material removal rate of reaming is very low but reaming gives very high accuracy and finishing.

Boring:

Drill bit sizes are standard and mostly up to certain limit. So, when large hole is required, initial hole is made with relative drill and then the hole is finished with boring operation. This operation also gives better finish to the drilled hole.

Counterboring:

counterboring finished part - Image taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Counterbore_hole_stainless_steel.jpg

Counter boring is a kind of boring in which just top part of drilled hole is needed to made large. It is done with the counter boring tool.

Countersinking:

In this operation, top part of hole is made conical for further use with special countersinking tool.

Tapping:

Tapping is internal threading of hole. This is achieved by the tapping tool with constant and controlled feed of tool.

Grinding:

Grinding itself is a big different topic. But it can be done with drilling machine for some purpose. If drilled hole is hardened then it can be reshaped with help of grinding operation. Grinding wheel is directly connected with spindle of drilling machine and then used up and down.

These are basic operations which can be performed with Drilling Machine.

Drilling Machine:

Drilling Machine is somewhat special purpose machine and somewhat general purpose machine. I am calling it special purpose machine because it is used for drilling related operation and general purpose because it can perform many operations like that of drilling.

Principle of Drilling Machine:

Drilling Machine is very simple machine. Job or work piece is fixed on work table. Opposite to Lathe Machine, at drilling machine, tool rotates and work piece or job is fixed at the work table. Tool rotating at high speed, is fed into work piece for operation.

radial drilling machine - Picture taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Radp01.jpg

Driving Mechanism:

Driving mechanism have some driving device, mostly these days, Electric Motor. Speed variation device like gear box or belt drive is also connected to it for achieving speed change.

Handle:

Though it is not the part of all the kinds of drilling machines, but used for most of them. Handle is used to control the feed into work piece.

Supporting Column:

It is circular column which holds the drilling head up.

Work Table With Tee Slots:

Work Table is fixed at ground base or connected to column. It is provided with tee slots, which allows the job to be fixed with work table. Work table can be swiveled into various axes for allowing angular drilling.

Types of Drilling Machine:

Introduction to Lathe Machine and Lathe Operations:

Lathe Machine is very basic machine tool which is capable of producing almost all kinds of output jobs with its wide range of operations. In this article, I will try to explain some of basic lathe operations which have brought importance to lathe machine.

1. Turning:

This is most basic and important lathe operation. It can be said that, Turning is the operation which has brought lathe into existence. Job is held at chuck and rotates at particular RPM. Tool held at tool post. With carriage assembly tool is fed into job parallel to axis of rotation of job. This operation is used to make job circular and to reduce the diameter of the job as per need.

2. Taper Turning:

This is similar to turning. Apart from turning, tool path cuts the axis of rotation of tool at a particular angle. This motion of tool is achieved through combined motions of carriage assembly and cross slide.

3. Knurling:

This is image is taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:R%C3%A4ndelwerkzeug.jpg

Knurling is not a cutting operation. Knurling is achieved using knurling tool. This tool has two wheels with slashed lines on it. This tool is pressed against rotating job to get knurled part. Knurling is achieved using plastic deformation of job material.

4. Drilling:

Drilling at the lathe machine is achieved in bit different way than other lathe operations. Drilling tool is held in the tail stock and fed into job using handle on tailstock.

5. Threading:

For threading operations to be done accurately, tool must be fed into job with constant speed. This constant motion is achieved by attaching carriage assembly with lead screw. Lead screw is connected to the driving mechanism through gear trains. So, for particular rpm of job there is constant rpm of lead screw. Threading is of two types viz. External Threading, Internal Threading.

a. External Threading:

External threading is done by V shaped tool. It is easier than internal threading.

b. Internal Threading:

Internal threading is also done by V shaped tool. But in this case tool is mounted on thin bar which can be able to go into bore of the workpiece where threading is to be done. Shaping tool for this operation is work of skilled worker.

6. Chamfering:

Chamfering is slash cutting of the edges of the workpiece. It can be called as very small taper turning but still taper turning needs a lot more accuracy and skill than chamfering. Also, both have very different sets of uses.

7. Grooving:

Grooving is generally needed to be done before external threading. In this, grooving tool is fed perpendicular to axis of rotation of job.

8. Parting:

Parting is like that of grooving. Parting is done for cutting of job into part.

This article lights up the various things about Lathe Machine viz. principle, its parts and their brief working and Basic mechanisms.

Lathe Machine:
Lathe Machine is one of most versatile machine within Machine Tools.

Principle of Lathe Machine:

Simply speaking, work piece rotates around its axis and tool is fed into it perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Tool moves in the direction parallel to axis of rotation.

Image originally taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wood-lathe-parts.svg

Parts of Lathe Machine:

There are various types of Lathe Machines depending on their use. And as the type changes its list of parts also goes on change. But still there are some basic parts which remains present in almost all kinds of Lathe Machines.

Headstock (Drive mechanism, chuck etc).

Tailstock.

Lathe Bed.

Cross Slide.

Carriage Assembly.

Tool Post.

Lead Screw.

Rails.

Headstock:

Headstock is part of the lathe that contains the spindle, drive and chuck jaws for holding the work piece. These days drive is mostly electrical drive with speed adjustment mechanism. Speed of drive can be controlled by Belt drive or Gear Box or advanced variable speed motors. Apart from this these mechanisms can be used with combination. Example of combination could be the lathe that has electrical motor as main drive. First speed variation is achieved with belt drive and second speed variation with gear box. Chuck Jaws is part of Headstock and is of two types. Three jaw chuck and four jaw chuck. Three jaw chuck is easy to use and most commonly used over lathe machine.

Tailstock:

As name suggests, Tailstock is on opposite site of headstock. Tailstock doesn’t have any drive mechanism. But it is supporting one. Tail stock is useful to hold long work pieces. Tailstock can move on the rails provided on lathe bed toward and away from the headstock. The center of tailstock must be on axis of headstock rotation.

Lathe Bed:

Lathe Bed is simple foundation part of lathe machine. It provides the foundation for various parts like headstock, tailstock, cross slide, feed mechanism, carriage assembly etc.

Carriage Assembly:

This is assembly of various vital parts of lathe machine. Carriage Assembly is mounted on rails, and the rails are mounted on the lathe bed. This Assembly can move on these rails to and fro between Headstock and Tailstock.

So, carriage is lowermost part which runs on rails along the axis of rotation of work piece with help of handle or lead screw. Another handle is provided on the carriage to control the motion of cross slide. Generally, cross slide moves perpendicular to the axis of rotation of work piece. Tool post is mounted on the top of cross slide. Various tool motions can be obtained with combination of these two motions, viz. cross slide and carriage.

Lead Screw:

As seen before, lead screw is used for moving the carriage along the rail. But it is pretty hard for a human operator to attain constant motion of carriage with its handle. There is a key that locks and unlocks the lead screw with carriage. Once locked, lead screw rotates with drive and carriage moves along its axis with constant feed.

Types of Lathe Machine:

Depending on various mountings on Lathe Machine, those can be differentiated in some basic types as given below.

Speed Lathe.

Bench Lathe.

Turret Lathe.

Center Lathe.

Tool Room Lathe.

Automatic Lathe.

Operations Performed on Lathe Machine:

Lathe Machine is general purpose machine. It is said that, any kind of part can be machined using Lathe Machine. Here is a list of operations those can be performed using Lathe.

Turning.

Taper Turning.

Threading.

Knurling.

Grooving.

Chamfering.

Drilling.

Parting.
