Amazing Polymer- Polyetheretherketone Torlon

Introduction:

Torlon is kind of plastic. Saying just a kind of plastic is like discrediting a lot of Torlon qualities. It is very high performance plastic. It is related to family Polyetheretherketone (Big name, mhmm!).

Major Properties of Torlon:

1. As I have initially told, its plastic. And hence its got to have very good chemical stability.

2. Apart from that, designers generally have to think about temperature considerations when they include plastic parts in their design. Because, at higher temperature most of the plastic gets dilated and fails to perform. But Polyetheretherketone torlon remains stiff and hard even at elevated temperatures.

3. Again, as it is plastic, there are lot of possibilities in manufacturing things with it as plastic allows to use molding, extruding etc. with ease.

Practical Uses of Torlon:

Torlon have very wide applications in various industries like Electronics and Telecommunications, Semiconductors, Aerospace, chemical processing and pharmacy etc.

1. In mechanical manufacturing industries, at flexible joints like bearings and bushings, needs plastic parts. But due to high speed and friction these parts get heated and don’t perform at extreme condition. Torlon have creep resistance up to 500 degree F. (260 degree C.). This employs Torlon for such jobs.

2. In aerospace industry, weight is major issue. Torlon can replace many metal parts with no compromise in work quality like wear resistance.

3. As told before, its stable. It can sustain intense chemical environments in industries. Also it stands good with fuels.

4. Connectors and fixtures can be machined from Torlon PAI to offer consistent electrical performance.

5. Torlon maintains high stiffness and strength in extreme temperature.

6. Excellent chemical resistance allows torlon to be used widely in chemical factories, laboratories etc.

7. Larger tolerance means, more scope to error. High stiffness and high temperature stability allows designer to come up with very low tolerances.
